Taylor Swift warned us that August would slip away into a moment in time — and, somehow, here we are.

The beach towels are a little less sandy. The back-to-school photos have been posted. Summer vacation is winding down, and everyone is starting to talk about pumpkin spice and sweaters.

But here on St. Simons Island, Georgia, we're not quite ready to pack away the beach bag.

In fact, we'll let you in on a little local secret:

Fall might just be the best time to visit St. Simons Island.

The crowds thin out. The humidity finally gets the memo. The beaches get quieter. The marsh turns that gorgeous shade of golden green. You can ride bikes without feeling like you've entered an endurance event, linger over dinner outside, and spend an afternoon on the beach without fighting for your favorite stretch of sand.

And this fall? There's plenty happening around the Golden Isles to give you an excuse to come back.

September: Still Summer, Just Better

September on St. Simons is basically summer's cooler, more relaxed younger sister.

The ocean is still warm, the beach is still calling, and you can actually enjoy a bike ride beneath the live oaks without immediately needing another shower.

Start the month with the final Little Light Music Concert of the season on September 6. Bring a picnic and a lawn chair to the Lighthouse lawn and listen to Motown with the ocean just beyond you.

Then spend a weekend wandering through Postell Park, where the St. Simons Market, Crafts in the Village and Art Under the Oaks bring artists and makers beneath the moss-draped oaks throughout September.

Add in morning walks on East Beach, bike rides to the Village, afternoons by the pool and dinner outside, and suddenly that little September getaway is sounding awfully tempting.

October: The Main Character of St. Simons Fall

If September is summer's encore, October is when St. Simons really enters its fall era.

And we are here for it.

October brings some of the Golden Isles' most anticipated events of the year.

Firebox: BBQ on the Bluff brings incredible pitmasters, chefs, live music and plenty of Southern flavor to St. Simons.

Then comes one of our favorite weekends of the entire year: the St. Simons Island Wine Festival, October 23–24. Think great wine, amazing food, live music and that only-on-St.-Simons combination of elevated and completely laid-back.

That same weekend, our neighbors on Jekyll Island host the Shrimp & Grits Festival, October 23–24, making it the perfect excuse to turn a weekend trip into a full Golden Isles getaway.

And then…

Georgia–Florida weekend.

If you know, you know.

The Golden Isles fill with red, black, blue and orange as fans make their way toward Jacksonville for one of college football's biggest rivalries. Stay on St. Simons, make a weekend of it and enjoy everything the island has to offer before and after kickoff.

November: Golf, Porches & Golden Marshes

Don't sleep on November.

Seriously.

This is when St. Simons settles into one of its prettiest seasons. Cooler mornings, golden marsh grass, oysters, fireplaces, long walks and sunsets that make you stop whatever you're doing to take a picture.

Just across the causeway, Brunswick PorchFest turns the porches of historic Old Town into stages for an afternoon of live music, food trucks and wandering from house to house.

Then November 16–22 brings the RSM Classic back to Sea Island Golf Club, when some of the best golfers in the world descend on the Golden Isles for one of our favorite local traditions.

Even if golf isn't your thing, the energy around the island that week absolutely is.

And Then There Are the Days With Nothing on the Calendar

Here's the thing about a fall trip to St. Simons:

You really don't need an event at all.

Some of the best days here are the ones with absolutely no plans.

Grab coffee and take it to the beach.

Rent bikes and ride beneath the live oaks.

Walk out onto the St Simons Island Pier at sunset.

Climb the St. Simons Island Lighthouse Museum.

Explore Fort Frederica National Monument.

Spend an afternoon on East Beach with approximately 75% fewer things than you hauled out there in July.

Or do absolutely nothing but sit by the pool with a book.

We support that itinerary, too.

So Long, Summer. Hello, St. Simons Fall.

Maybe August really does slip away.

But around here, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Because when summer ends, St. Simons doesn't shut down. It slows down.

The weather gets better. The beaches get quieter. The sunsets somehow get prettier. And the island starts to feel a little more like the St. Simons those of us who live here know and love.
